| Big Boy the Alligator was born
in 1961 on an alligator farm in Louisiana, USA. When he hatched he was
8cm long and weighed 85grams. He now weighs 125kg and measures 3 metres
in length. His diet consists of fish, birds and small mammals. The life
span of these creatures is 50 years+
Big Boy is a male alligator. After hatching at the alligator farm in Louisiana one of his digits was removed to mark him being a male. This is necessary as the sex organs are internal and to probe him as an adult to see what sex he is would be dangerous and difficult. This way we can see at a glance that he is a male. Big Boy is kept in his outside enclosure during the summer months. The length of his stay out there is determined by the temperature. When it is felt to be too cold for him he is moved inside to his heated quarters. After appearing in many films and TV programmes (most notably the James Bond film 'Live and Let Die') he is spending a quiet retirement at Beaver Water World along with Colin the Caiman Crocodile, who has appeared on the Children's TV programme 'The Really Wild Show'. SADLY BIG BOY PASSED AWAY 04/09/2006, FOLLOWING AN ILLNESS.
